Since 2011, the CMSE has hosted the Mathematics Specialist Conference as an opportunity for K-12 mathematics teacher leaders to come together to share their knowledge and experiences. If you serve your school or district as a math specialist, lead teacher, content coach, or any other instructional leadership role, we invite you to attend the Annual CMSE Mathematics Specialist Conference.
Price:
$175.00
This two-day session engages teachers in exploring strategies and tools to introduce students to algebraic reasoning including conceptual development of integer operations, solving equations, and connecting algebra to prior mathematics learning. Participants will also explore common misconceptions that students have related to graphing, slope, and functions.
$300.00
Area models serve as a powerful visual representation of numerical relationships that can be applied from single digit multiplication in 3rd grade through multiplying polynomials in middle school and recognizing geometric patterns in high school. During this session, educators will explore the progression of standards to better understand how using area models can aide students in making connections between computational and algebraic skills.
$150.00
From understanding numbers and operations in the elementary grades to using them for data representations in middle and high school, number lines are a versatile mathematical tool. This session will guide teachers through understanding the important structure of number lines, effective use as a model for computation, and as a tool for representing data.
Participants will explore how contextual problems are represented throughout the standards as they collaborate with others to engage in problem solving using Polya’s problem solving process. Teachers will come away with a cohesive understanding of how word problems progress across the curriculum and explore ways to make word problems more accessible to students at all grade levels.
This course is one of four courses in the CMSE Middle Math Institute. Educators who complete all four courses will be eligible to receive a Middle Level Mathematics (901) Supplemental Endorsement.

Help your students step back in time and explore the history of science, technology, engineering and math through the Library of Congress’ collection of primary sources. In the STEPS workshop, science, mathematics, and other STEM-focused educators will learn how to find, evaluate, and use historical primary sources from the Library of Congress in classroom instruction. This is a refundable seat deposit. Participants who complete the two-day training will have this payment refunded.
$30.00
This two-day session will engage teachers in exploring strategies and tools to introduce representations of fractions, including manipulatives, number lines, and visual diagrams. Strategies for building conceptual understanding of fraction equivalence will be explored as well as strategies for teaching operations with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division). Participants will discuss how strategies build upon students’ prior experiences with operations with whole numbers.
