The Quiet Crisis: Identifying and Treating Perinatal Mood Disorders in Your Clients - Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025

This workshop will be conducted live through an online platform called Zoom. The evening before the event you will receive an email with a link to the Zoom meeting, and other important information. Any updates or changes will be shared via email.

Workshop Description:

This in-depth workshop is designed to provide clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of perinatal mental health, including the wide spectrum of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) such as depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and postpartum psychosis. In addition to these clinical presentations, we will explore the psychological impact of infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss—experiences that are often overlooked but significantly affect individuals during the perinatal period. While perinatal mental health is frequently associated with obstetric or pediatric care, it is highly relevant across all areas of clinical practice. This workshop is open to clinicians in any setting who may encounter clients navigating pregnancy, loss, or early parenthood.

The session will be structured around a combination of lecture, interactive discussion, case studies, and guided Q&A. Participants will begin by gaining foundational knowledge of PMADs and their symptoms, followed by a deeper look into how issues like pregnancy loss and infertility contribute to emotional distress. We will examine key risk and protective factors that influence outcomes and provide a framework for effective screening, assessment, and diagnosis using evidence-based tools. The workshop will also explore treatment strategies, including both therapeutic approaches and considerations for pharmacological support, always emphasizing a trauma-informed, client-centered perspective.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to recognize the signs of perinatal mental health challenges, understand their prevalence and risk factors, and apply practical tools for intervention and support. This training will help clinicians build greater confidence in identifying and treating PMADs and integrating this knowledge into their existing clinical work. Teaching methods will include didactic content, real-world case examples, group reflection, and the sharing of resources for both professionals and clients. Participants will receive handouts and resource lists for continued learning and client support.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of perinatal mental health, including the prevalence and clinical presentation of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs)
  2. Participants will learn to identify key signs and symptoms, as well as recognize risk factors and protective influences that impact perinatal mental health outcomes.
  3. Participants will be introduced to evidence-based tools and treatment strategies to effectively assess and support individuals experiencing PMADs
