Prescribing Controlled Substances in NJ Online Self Study Program - June 4-19, 2024

This session is online and participants will have the time frame to complete the 6 hour program.

This 6 hour course can be used to count toward the recently released Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) 8 hour training requirement for DEA registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance abuse disorders. Desired Learning outcome: The advanced practice nurse will apply the concepts learned in this course when prescribing controlled substances for their patients.

Program description: This innovative course provides an up-to-date overview of the pharmacology of controlled substances. It has been designed to meet the continuing education requirement for the prescriptive practice of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in NJ. The presenters explore the challenges of responsible prescribing and will share the insight and knowledge gained from their nursing practice. The program is comprised of four modules which include audiovisual material, readings, case studies, narrated slides with valuable references and resources.

Topics will include: Pharmacodynamics of controlled substances, prevention/diminution of addictions in the general population, prevention & management of impaired practice among health professionals, and the use of controlled substances for the management of psychiatric, non-psychiatric and non-pain related conditions.

Each session is online self-paced learner activity and participants will have the entire time frame to complete the 6 hours. The course may be completed in increments. Computer and internet access are required.   One or two days before the start date participants will receive email instructions on how to access the course materials.

Successful Completion: Participants will attend 95% of the program, and complete an online evaluation to receive contact hours.
