2018 Spring Headlights Trip

March 3rd - March 10th or 11th, 2018
This spring our Campus Ministry Headlights trips will be going to East L.A., CA, Denver, CO, and to Chicago, IL. These trips are opportunities to immerse yourself in an experience that will help you to better understand the realities and needs of people with economic, educational, cultural, and social challenges. Though there are three different trips, all trips will focus on an understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, a chance to meet people whose lives are dedicated to Social Justice, an opportunity to encounter people who live in the reality of poverty, violence, immigration, homelessness, and also a chance to interact with children in educational settings. Reflection and prayer are also vital components of the trip. These trips are open to students of all faiths. To learn more about the Headlights program visit our blog:

Cost of the trip is $325 and the deadline for applying is January 21st.

If for some reason there are more applicants than can be taken and you are not selected, your deposit will be refunded. Students will leave from Helena on Saturday, March 3rd and return on Saturday, March 10th or Sunday March 11th. In addition to being selected to go, a commitment to participating in weekly meetings and the follow up meetings are essential. You will also need to provide a one page reflection paper after having attended the trip. The $325 for the trip covers only a portion of each participant's cost.

East Los Angeles - This trip focuses on experiencing some of the challenges of poverty, drug abuse, gang life, and inner city education. Students will spend time at Homeboy Industries, at the Sr. Dolores mission and school, touring skid row, and other outreaches of the mission. The group will stay with host families and at the mission, so it will be a true cultural immersion experience as well. It is an amazing experience of how our faith can be used as a conduit for change and an instrument for social justice in really profound and beautiful ways!

Chicago, IL - This trip will focus on serving the underprivileged in the greater Chicago area. We will be spending time at "Our Lady of the Poor" mission, a Franciscan mission that is dedicated to assisting the materially poor and sharing the Catholic faith. It is an amazing opportunity to encounter the challenges of urban life in Chicago, as well as meet people who are on the front lines striving to work against the injustices that are present there. There service include a mobil food pantry, after school programs with kids, distribution of clothing and goods, senior citizens programming, and community dinners to name a few!

Denver, CO - This trip will work with Christ in the City, a volunteer organization that works with the poor and homeless of Denver. Their focus is primarily to reach out to the homeless, as well as do intellectual and spiritual formation so that we may better come to understood the structural injustices that exist amongst our poor. By encountering Christ in the other, we come to know more about ourselves. Students will also stay with the community of the Beatitudes, and participate in daily spiritual life in the monastery. https://
