DXA Bone Density and Body Composition Analysis
Bone Densitometry uses small amounts of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA or DXA) to assess the density of bones and body composition. This technology is very useful in detecting osteoperosis, osteopenia and analyzing body composition. The procedure is safe, non-invasive and very accurate, providing the gold standard for diagnosing bone loss conditions. The amount of radiation is less than one tenth of the amount used during a normal chest X-ray and equivalent to one day of exposure to natural background radiation. The amount of radiation used during a DXA scan is considered safe for adults but can cause damage to unborn babies. If you are or may become pregnant, please do not book this service. The initial visit takes 30 minutes to allow time to become familiar with the machine and complete paperwork. When you arrive, you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire and sign a consent form. For more information about bone densitometry, please visit Radiology Info for Patients.
