Introduction to Embroidery

Dates: February 23, March 2, no class March 9 (spring break), March 16, and March 23 
Time: 6:00-7:30 p.m.  
Class designed for: Ages 18 and up

Location: Storm Shelter at the Jackson Avenue Center

Join accomplished sewist and artist, Andi Bedsworth, in this class on beginner embroidery. You will learn how to get started, basic stitches, transferring techniques for embroidery clothing, and more! 

Skills Introduced:

Class 1

Setting up-learn how to put fabric in hoop, what needles to use, how to separate strands of floss, etc.

Class 2

Discussion on different thread types including floss, pearl cotton threads, specialty threads including ribbon embroidery

Class 3

Discussion on how to showcase your embroidery skills with examples of quilts, pillows, clothes, and framed pieces

Class 4

Demonstration on how to do transfer techniques including transfer pencils/pens, transfer paper, tissue paper transfer, various patterns with iron on transfers, and even solvy iron on. After demos, you will learn how to apply a solvy transfer to garment of your choice that you bring in and how to get started with the embroidery.

Please note: Some hand strength and dexterity are required.  

Provided Supplies: Fabric, hoops, floss and threads

Recommended Supplies (optional):
  • A garment to add embroidery to 
Suggestions:  You may also wish to bring the following:
  • Project bag
  • Small scissors/snips
  • Glasses or magnification, if needed
About Andi

After 20 years in the theater costuming business, I was ready to do something that incorporated both my costuming expertise, my art training and my passion for teaching people of all ages. With a lot of help from the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and the Mississippi Small Business department at Ole Miss, I launched Art To Go LLC in 2011, so I could start teaching classes all over the community.
Online registration for this class will close at 4 pm on February 21st. This class has a required minimum of 6 students. If the required minimum is not met, anyone registered will be informed and refunded.
