Make a Faux Cathedral Window Quilt

Make a Faux Cathedral Window Quilt

Dates: March 3, 17, 31, and April 14
Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Class designed for: Ages 18 and up
Instructor: Carol Alderman
Location: Storm Shelter at the Jackson Avenue Center

Join experienced quilter, Carol Alderman, to learn how to make a Faux Cathedral Window Quilt using an easy Quilt-As-You-Go technique. Learn new skills, meet new friends, and go home with a beautiful quilt! You will complete a lap quilt size in class to learn the technique, but you can make your quilt as large as you want by simply adding more circles.

The Faux Cathedral Window Quilt is made completely of circles of one size (the larger the circle, the fewer blocks you will make). Circles from 7 to 12 inches in diameter are the easiest to work with.

Choosing Fabrics

This quilt may be made with a carefully planned fabric collection, with precuts, or with “scrappy print” windows combined with one or more solid color fabric scraps.

Fabric amounts will vary depending depending on the size of your circle and your finished quilt. For example, a throw size (approximately 51” x 62”) using 8 inch circles (99 circles – 9 across, 11 down) in two colors (front is one color, back is one color), you will need 6 1/4 yards of front fabric and 6 1/4 yards of back fabric.

Please note: This class meets every other week.

About Carol

I was fortunate to be raised in a “sewing family” and have been sewing and doing a variety of needlework since I was 7 years old. During my teens I primarily sewed clothing for myself. After I married I branched out to make pillows, draperies, etc for our home. When our children arrived I added smocking and heirloom sewing to the mix, always supported by the best seamstress I knew — my mom. When my mom retired and suddenly had more time on her hands she began quilting with a group of ladies in her rural community.

She inspired me to try quilting and after my first “top” I knew I had a new lifelong hobby. Quilting was secondary to my career as an educator, but I managed to take a few classes, learn new techniques, and produce quilts for family and friends. When I fully retired a few years ago I converted my home office into a quilting/crafting room and began networking with other quilters at quilt shows, retreats, and guild meetings. I have enjoyed merging my love for teaching and quilting to inspire others to learn this craft.
