South Korea: Contemporary Korean Culture and Art Summer 2026 payment 3 (due March 15, 2026)

May 8 - May 22, 2026

This course will examine Korean culture, with a specific focus on contemporary visual art. We will think together through what it means for this relatively small country to have such outsized impact on global culture today, including the world of art. We will study the broad arcs of Korean cultural history and aesthetics from the Three Kingdoms Period to the present day, including questions surrounding contemporary Korean culture, via visits to museums, palaces and public art installations.

While based in Seoul primarily, excursions for cultural enrichment and historical consciousness will include a weekend trip to the coastal city of Busan. Together we will assess the ever-growing influence of Korean social and cultural life, with a specific focus on traditions of visual art.
