Crime Analysis for Risk-Based Policing

Risk-Based Policing (RBP) uses Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) to inform decisions about where to go and what to focus on when you get there. RBP diagnoses crime hot spots and fixes them. And it prevents crime by focusing on the local situational contexts. RBP is evidence-based, with scientific experiments done in small and large jurisdictions throughout the United States demonstrating how it meets local needs and expectations for better public safety.

This interactive workshop, instructed by Dr. Joel Caplan of Simsi, is designed for analysts of all levels who are currently employed with public safety agencies in the U.S. You do not need any previous experience in RTM or RBP. All software and materials will be provided in class. We'll utilize a watch-then-practice learning experience, with hands-on opportunities to grow skills and confidence in producing and communicating analytic outputs that drive operations. We'll run RTM analyses with real data using Simsi's RTMDx software and then discuss how to use a variety of tools in the crime analysts' toolkit to inform resource deployments and place-based actions for police and their community partners. You will learn how RTM works, view RBP case studies, and gain practical insights and tips to take home for implementation.

This is a live training at the Upstate Crime Analysis Center in Greenville, SC. The training will be held on Tuesday, May 7 0830-1700.

The training is sponsored by UCAC Partner Simsi, Inc. A certificate will be provided to participants who successfully complete the training workshop.
