How can playful music-making help preschool and PreK–5 learners—including students with special needs—focus, connect, communicate, create, and lead? Drawing from Mary’s new Alfred Music book, Drum Circles 101, the workshop progresses from playful teacher-guided games to peer interaction, musical conversations, improvisation, collaborative music-making, and student leadership. Using drums, barred instruments, unpitched percussion Boomwhackers, movement, and voice, participants will engage in practical ways to adapt activities for different ages, developmental levels, abilities, and learning styles while encouraging children to contribute their own musical ideas. Leave with a collection of engaging drum circle and classroom games ready to use with a flexible framework for helping every child find a meaningful way to participate, interact, create, and lead.
