Introduction to Translation

GENERAL TRANSLATION & COMMUNITY INTERPRETING CERTIFICATES

NOTE: This registration is for courses in the Fall semester. The course is Introduction to Translation. Seats are limited. Please register as soon as possible.

Academically trained translators and interpreters are valuable assets in public services such as health and legal settings, but also in audiovisual, literature, conferences, business professions, and more.  Untrained translators and interpreters can find themselves facing daunting challenges in all these different settings. This program aims to develop a qualified professional translation and interpreting workforce to improve the integration and appreciation of the Spanish language and cultures into the US system.

About the Program
This program is based on the Minor in Spanish Translation & Interpreting offered at USC Upstate. You will gain 5.0 CEU per course, this 50-hour Continuing Education program (for each course) in general Spanish translation and community interpreting is designed for bilingual community members who wish to develop professional translation & interpreting skills to apply in numerous settings. The program aims to help providers meet the demand for professional Spanish translation and interpreters to serve the growing communities of Spanish-speaking clients, patients, parents, families, and students in the US and South Carolina.

About the Certificates
There are three possible Certificates for prospective students of the program:
Certificate in General Translation (after completing two courses in translation: Introduction to Translation offered in the Fall Semester, and Advanced Translation offered in the Spring Semester)
Certificate in Community Interpreting (after completing two courses in interpreting: Introduction to Interpreting offered in the Spring Semester, and Advanced Translation offered in the Fall Semester)
Certificate in General Translation and Community Interpreting (after completing the four courses above, two in translation and two in interpreting, a total of three academic semesters)

Purposes
Gain an extensive introduction to the theories, practices, techniques, and ethics of translation & interpreting working with the English and Spanish languages.
Provide a credential for professional translators and interpreters who wish to work in different settings. There is no existing statewide academic certification program for translators & interpreters. Students who complete the courses and pass the final exam will receive a certificate of completion from the University of South Carolina Upstate and El Centro (South Carolina Centro Latino ) at the end of the courses.

Who Should Enroll?
Participants in the Spanish General Translation & Community Interpreting courses should be fluent in both English and Spanish. Prospective students may arrange to complete the Spanish and English placement exam at USC Upstate’s Spartanburg or Greenville locations and have a follow-up conversation with the course instructor to assess fluency and set up all students for success in the course.

WHEN:
Students can meet face-to-face or online synchronously throughout the week course hours and days specified by the University.

COURSE MATERIALS:
All course materials are provided through the online course site. Participants will need a separate, paid subscription to GoReact for interactive online video feedback on interpreting activities and projects, and the book the instructor selects for translation courses.

Maria Francisco-Montesó is a Spanish Senior Instructor at USC Upstate, and the Assistant Director of the SC Centro Latino at USC Upstate. An accredited and certified translator and interpreter, Montesó holds a BA and Master of Arts degree in translation and interpreting from the Universitat Jaume I in Spain.
