This presentation will enable participants to distinguish between clinical and forensic assessments, emphasizing the critical differences in their focus, ethical considerations, and use of collateral information. Through discussion of the principles of psychological testing in forensic settings, criteria for the admissibility of expert testimony, and the unique role conflicts that can arise when transitioning from clinical to forensic work, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of forensic psychological practice.


ABOUT THE PRESENTER

David Shapiro, Ph.D., ABPP is a Professor Emeritus at the College of Psychology at Nova Southeastern University. He was involved in teaching, training, and research in the forensic concentration. He holds a Diplomate in Forensic Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology (1979). Dr. Shapiro has authored fifteen books and approximately forty peer reviewed articles and book chapters in forensic psychology, ethics, and malpractice issues. He has served on the ethics committees of the American Psychological Association and the American Board of Professional Psychology and has received distinguished Contribution Awards from the American Academy of Forensic Psychology and from Division 42 of the American Psychological Association.

  • Explain the different approaches to informed consent

10:00 am – 10:30 am Differences between a clinical and forensic assessment
10:30 am – 11:00 am Constraints when using psychological testing in a forensic case; adjustments in interpretation of test results
11:00 am – 12:00 pm Criteria for admissibility of expert testimony; expert witness; differences between an expert witness and lay witness; role                                               conflicts shifting from clinical to forensic work
