Ethics and Boundary Issues: Essentials for Chapter 491 Licensees

This course is designed to meet the biennial licensure renewal requirements for clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors. Participants will meet Florida’s mandate for continuing education in the areas of professional ethics and boundary issues. With emphasis on case discussions identifying timely and relevant ethical dilemmas, participants will review ethical principles in an effort to best address them. In particular, discussion will focus on moral principles and the ethical decision-making process addressing many topics including the counselor as a person and as a professional, values, multicultural perspectives in dealing with ethical issues, confidentiality and privacy, multiple and dual relationships, boundary issues, and sexual relationships and criminal behavior. There will also be a focus on ethics related to telehealth. Relevant practice elements of Florida Administrative Rule Title 64B4 will also be addressed.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Lawrence Rubin, Ph.D., ABPP, RPT-S is an adjunct professor in the College of Psychology at Nova Southeastern University, and retired Professor of Counselor Education (32 years) from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. A Diplomate in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, Dr. Rubin’s private practice work has focused on children, adolescents, and families. Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association for Play Therapy, he has lectured broadly on topics related to child therapy, ethics, and the integration of popular culture into clinical work. His professional publications in both journals and books span both the fields of counseling and popular culture. He is the editor for Psychotherapy.net.

09:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Review of ACA, AMHCA, AAMFT, and NASW ethical codes, as well as Florida Administrative Rule F.A.C 64B4. 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Application of the Corey ethical problem solving heuristic to confidentiality, values, telehealth, and multicultural perspectives. 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Ethical decision-making and case studies around personal and clinical boundaries as they impact the therapeutic relationship and process.
