Prescribing Controlled Dangerous Substances in NJ Online Self Study Program - February 18, 2025

Six (6) contact hours will be provided.

Desired Learning outcome: The advanced practice nurse will apply the concepts learned in this course when prescribing controlled substances for their patients.

Program description: This innovative course provides an up-to-date overview of the pharmacology of controlled dangerous substances. It has been designed to meet the continuing education requirement for the prescriptive practice of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in NJ. The presenters explore the challenges of responsible prescribing and will share the insight and knowledge gained from their nursing practice. The program is comprised of four modules which include audiovisual material, readings, case studies, narrated slides with valuable references and resources.

Topics will include: Pharmacodynamics of controlled dangerous substances, prevention/diminution of addictions in the general population, prevention & management of impaired practice among health professionals, as well as use of controlled substances for pain management and non-pain related conditions.

Dr. Nicole Keegan, DNP, APN-C, Director Pain Management Services Monmouth Medical Center, Sole Proprietor of the Pain Relief Center of Central NJ.
Suzanne Kinkle, MSN, RN, CARN, Director of Business Development Recovery Management Systems, Florida.

The course is online and is a self-paced learner activity and participants will have the entire time frame to complete the 6-hour program. The course may be completed in increments. Computer and internet access are required. One or two days before the start date participants will receive email instructions on how to access the course materials.

Successful Completion: Participants will attend 95% of the program, and complete an online evaluation to receive contact hours. Successfully pass a 20-question quiz with a score of 90 or above. There will be an opportunity to review material and re-take the quiz as necessary.

There are no financial relationships with ineligible companies for those involved with the ability to control the content of this activity. There is no commercial support for this activity.


This 6 hour course can be used to count toward the recently released Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) 8 hour training requirement for DEA registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance abuse disorders.
