Monitoring and Managing Substance Use Disorders in Pain Management

This 2 hour course can be used to count toward the recently released Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) 8 hour training requirement for DEA registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance abuse disorders. The purpose of this program is to provide nurses and healthcare professionals with updated information on how to screen and support pain management patients when substance abuse is a concern.  Using a case study approach, the instructor will describe the assessment and evaluation process, tools and techniques for screening and outline important considerations when prescribing.

Topics will include an overview of:

  • Substance abuse disorders
  • Identification of at-risk patients
  • Review risk management tools and screening tools
  • Interpreting toxicology reports
  • Education methodologies for patients and their families
  • Creating a pain medication contract with patients
  • Medication facilitated recovery
  • Numerous resources for further information

Lead Instructor: Dr. Nicole Keegan DNP, APN. Dr. Keegan is an Advanced Practice Nurse and a graduate from Monmouth University’s DNP program. She is the Director of Pain Management Services for the Monmouth Medical Center and is the sole proprietor of the Pain Relief Center of New Jersey, an outpatient pain practice established in 2014.

Successful Completion: Participants must attend 95% of the program, participate in learning activities and complete an online evaluation to receive contact hours.  Planners, content experts and speakers have declared no conflict of interest. There is no commercial support for this activity.
