Sexual Assault Examination Across the Lifespan ~ March - May 2022

Location: This innovative course will feature a combination of virtual, online and class-room learning activities
Fee: $875 (MU students, Alumni and Preceptors) $775

Seventy-four contact hours will be provided.


March 8th - Introduction to SANE practice (live virtual class meeting – remote) 6:30 – 8:30pm

March 8th - April 5th (remote learning-online, self-paced study) approximately 22 hours.

Live virtual class meetings from 6:30 – 8:30pm on the following days:
April 5, 12, 19, 26, & May 3rd

April 28 & 29 –meeting on campus (exam technique lectures, equipment demonstrations and simulated exam training) from 9am – 5:30pm (tentatively scheduled pending Covid-19 restrictions)

May 13th last day to complete assignments and take the final exam.


*Please note the following book is  required for this program: SANE/SAFE Forensic Learning Series - Adolescent & Adult Sexual Assault Assessment (2nd edition). It is available on line and should be purchased before the course begins.

This course reflects the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) standards for adolescent, adult, and pediatric SANE education and the revised requirements of the NJ Board of Nursing for Forensic Nurse Examiner education. For MU Forensic Nursing Students, this course satisfies requirements for the SANE course in the certificate and MSN program.

This program is designed for the RN with at least 2 years recent clinical experience desiring to obtain the in-depth knowledge & skills needed to provide effective health care & services to victims of sexual assault.  Content will include the biological, psychological, social & medico-legal dynamics of sexual assault incl. care of both male & female survivors across the lifespan. 

Topics will include: role of the Forensic Nurse Examiner in caring for sexual assault and abuse victims across the lifespan, assessment and evaluation of adult, adolescent, and pediatric survivors, nursing management of the sexually assaulted patient, evidence collection and analysis, exam documentation, clinical skill demonstrations, pelvic examination practicum, interdisciplinary collaboration, NJ laws, regulations, and an overview of the criminal justice system including tips on testifying.

The desired learning outcome the registered nurse who attends will be prepared to apply the concepts learned to practice when caring for victims of sexual assault.

Instructor:  Eileen Allen, MSN, RN, FN-CSA, SANE-A, SANE –P: Nationally certified sexual assault examiner & practicing forensic nurse, retired coordinator of the Monmouth County FNE/SART program. She has presented numerous lectures on a variety of topics related to Forensic Nursing for local, regional, and national and international audiences.

Guest lectures will also be presented by experts from the scientific, legal and advocacy communities.  Gynecological Teaching Associates (live models) are used to enhance clinical training experience.

The Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies at Monmouth University is an approved provider of continuing nursing professional development by New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission On Accreditation.  Provider Number: P242 - 10/22/24.

Planners, content experts and speakers have declared no conflict of interest.  There is no commercial support for this activity.  To successfully earn the contact hour certificate, participants must complete the entire program, review all self-study materials (time will be monitored), earn a score of 80 or above on the post-test and complete the program evaluation.  A certificate will be emailed after the course ends & upon verification of successful completion.
