Swimming Session 3

Babies, toddlers and children up to 5 years old learn to love the water. Older children and adults learn swimming, diving and water safety (goggles recommended). Instructors are Red Cross certified.

Parents and children learn together to increase a child's comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control.


Preschool (4 to 5 years)

Students learn safe entries and exits from the water, use of a life jacket, how to get help; the following skills with support - rolling over, bubble blowing, arm action and leg action, finning, front and back float. Level 3 - exit skills are done with no assistance and include combined arm and leg action in strokes.

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills - Students learn safe entries and exits from the water, bobbing, use of a life jacket, how to get help; the following skills with minimal support - rolling over, bubble blowing, combined arm and leg action, front and back glides and floats, tread water.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Students learn the following skills without support - jumping from the side, bobbing with head completely submerged, rolling over, treading water, finning, combined arm and leg action for 5 body lengths on both front and back, front and back glides and floats, recover to a stand.

Level 3 Stroke Development - Students learn jumping into deep water, diving from a sitting or kneeling position, treading water for 30 seconds, front crawl, elementary backstroke; kicks for butterfly, breaststroke, sidestroke, and safety skills.

Level 4 Stroke Improvement - Students learn diving from a compact and stride position, open turns on front and back, treading water with two different kicks, swimming underwater, surface dives, front crawl for 25 yards, breaststroke for 15 yards, elementary backstroke for 25 yards, back crawl for 15 yards and further safety skills and assists.

Level 5 Stroke Refinement - Students learn the shallow dive, flip turns, and swimming all strokes for longer distances.

Level 6 Fitness Swimmer - Students swim longer distances and learn competitive etiquette and skills, beginning-level springboard diving and higher level self-rescue and assists.
