Act 48 Professional Development

Act 48 Professional Development
Act 48 Professional Development - October 19th from 9 am to 2 pm/with Lunch Included

Multicultural education is not a task to be completed or even an end goal to be accomplished. Instead, it is an approach to education that aims to include all students, promote learning of other cultures, enhance fluency, and teach healthy social skills in a multicultural setting that is inclusive of all students. Equity and accountability in multicultural classrooms can be promoted through multiple means of assessment and curriculum development.

This workshop, designed for Pennsylvania educators and education students, includes three interactive sessions taught by ICAPE’s experienced language specialists:

Part I: Challenges of Multilingual Writers Across the Disciplines
This session examines writing challenges (across the disciplines) faced by multilingual students in ESL and mainstream classrooms and introduces theory of multilingual writing instruction and strategies to create an equitable cross-cultural classroom.

Part II: Designing an Equitable Learning Space for Multilingual Students
This interactive session presents strategies to make writing curriculum accessible for multilingual writers and explores tools to increase student engagement and success: multimodal writing, art, technology, virtual reality, and collaboration. It includes a visit to Lehigh’s virtual reality lab.

Part III: Level the Playing Field: Equitable Writing Assessment
During this session we will discuss individual concerns about multilingual writing assessment and address ways to implement multilingual assessment strategies that ensure equitable assessment for all students.

Participants will receive four Act 48 credits.
Note: Act 48 hours earned with PDE Professional Personnel ID (PPID) number. The PPID number is required to earn Act 48 hours. PDE will not accept a participant’s Social Security Number (SSN) in lieu of the PDE Professional Personnel ID (PPID) number. Lehigh will not process requests without the PPID.
