Archaeology Tour: Sacred Stone Structures

Rock mounds, stone effigy formations, and other intriguing features come to life on this guided archaeology hike led by JSU archaeologist Dr. Harry Holstein. Participants will explore the Mountain Longleaf Refuge near White Plains, Alabama, gaining insight into the cultural and archaeological importance of stone structures.

This workshop is one of our most popular events. We are excited to offer this experience free of charge. Space is limited, and advanced registration is required. Ages 14 and up. Donations appreciated.

Program Overview

The day will begin with a 45 minute “Sacred Stone” presentation in the JSU Archaeology Lab, providing background and context for the sites you’ll visit. Following the presentation, participants will travel together in a JSU van to the field location. The field portion of the tour includes a visit to Choccolocco Mountain, where the group will hike to several stone structure sites.

Hikes are moderate to difficult, featuring short but steep trails and uneven terrain. Participants should be prepared for strenuous hiking and wear appropriate footwear.
