Iowa Central is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), competing at the Division I and Division II levels. The Triton athletic programs have combined for 69 national championships. Iowa Central has claimed national titles in men’s bowling (two), women’s bowling (two), cheer (eight), men’s cross country (four), women’s cross country (eight), dance (one), football (one), men’s half marathon (seven), women’s half marathon (five), rugby (two), women’s soccer (one), sport shooting (six), men’s track and field (seven), women’s track and field (six) and wrestling (nine). In addition to the success in national tournaments, Iowa Central has claimed 11 of the last 12 Daktronics Cup titles, given yearly to the top two-year athletic department in the nation. The school also has won the Learfield Director’s Cup the last four years, a first in the history of the award. Four of our former coaches, Paul Shupe (football), Dennis Friedrichs (wrestling), Dennis Pilcher (men’s basketball) and Denny Myers (track and field) are members of the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame. Iowa Central fields men’s teams in baseball, basketball, bowling, cheer, cross country, eSports, football, golf, marching band, rodeo, rugby, soccer, sport shooting, swimming, tennis, track and field, and wrestling, and women’s teams in basketball, bowling, cheer, cross country, dance, eSports, golf, marching band, rodeo, soccer, softball, sport shooting, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Our athletic department helps fulfill the mission of developing whole persons and preparing them for the future by developing strength of body, discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, character, integrity, leadership, and a sense of fair play. All participants in the department shall be expected to exemplify impeccable integrity – be they student-athletes, coaching staff, administrative professionals or support staff. The department values diversity in its people, whether that diversity is expressed by heritage, race, belief, sexual orientation, or gender, and recognizes the need to work as a team while valuing each individual’s self-worth. Teaching is our core, positive growth and development of student-athletes is our goal and the highest level of performance both in the classroom, in social settings, and on the field is our target outcome.
