Presenter:  Dr. Steven M. Harris, PhD, LMFT and Professor in the Department of Family Social Science, University of Minnesota

Workshop:  When One Says "I'm Done" and The Other Says "Let's Try":  Discernment Counseling for Mixed- Agenda Couples

Workshop Summary:  Couples on the brink of divorce often lack clarity and confidence in making a decision about the future of their marriage. Dr. Harris will present the latest findings of his divorce decision-making research and connect this research to a clinical approach designed to meet each member of the couple where they are currently at. Many couples on the brink of divorce are made up of one person who is leaning into the relationship, who wants it to get to a healthier place, and a second person who is leaning out of or is ambivalent about being in the relationship.  These "mixed-agenda" couples require a different approach than traditional couples therapy. Dr. Harris will introduce those in attendance to the Discernment Counseling protocol developed at the University of Minnesota for couples on the brink of divorce.
