Trailside Science - Spring Homeschool Series




Trailside Science” is a Unit with 6 classes. (Classes are on each Tuesday from April 21st - May 26th )
April 21st: Field Skills & Ecology
Youth will develop practical skills essential to the field of wildlife biology, including identifying tracks and scat from species commonly found in South Carolina. Through hands-on experiences, they will learn how to observe and interpret signs of wildlife in natural habitats. These skills will strengthen their understanding of animal behavior, habitats, and ecosystems. Participants will also build confidence in field research techniques used by professional wildlife biologists.

April 28th: Ornithology
Youth will learn to identify and observe bird species commonly found in South Carolina. They will explore different habitats, to understand where various birds live and why. Through guided activities, participants will discover how habitat features influence bird behavior and survival. This experience will strengthen their appreciation for local ecosystems and the importance of conservation.

May 5th:  Entomology
Youth will study the behavior, diversity, and ecology of insects to explore the fascinating world of pollinators. They will learn how different species contribute to plant reproduction and healthy ecosystems. Through observation and hands-on activities, participants will discover the important role pollinators play in food production and biodiversity. This experience will deepen their understanding of environmental stewardship and the interconnectedness of living organisms.

May 12th: Aquatic Ecology
Youth will learn about stream habitats and the macroinvertebrates that live in freshwater streams.  By studying the presence and diversity of macroinvertebrates, participants will discover how these organisms serve as indicators of stream health. This hands-on learning experience will help them understand the connections between environmental conditions and ecosystem quality.

May 19th: Botany

May 26th: Geology
Youth will study the geologic composition of their local area and explore the types of rocks and landforms. Through hands-on activities, participants will practice basic field skills used by geologists to help them better understand how Earth’s processes shape the landscape around them.



Price: $10/ person per class
          $60/ person for Unit

  ages 3-7 (10am-12pm) 
  ages 8-14 (1pm-3pm)

What to Bring: 
*Comfortable walking shoes 
*Water bottle 
*Bug spray 
*Long sleeves and pants recommended 
*Curiosity and a sense of adventure! 


Directions: From Walmart in Camden head north on Springdale Drive, toward the race track. Chestnut Ferry Road (a dirt road) crosses over Springdale Drive at the bend. Turn left onto Chestnut Ferry Road and continue down until you see our pinecone logo sign. Our driveway is the last on the left. After proceeding through our gate, do not stop in the maintenance lot. Continue down our long driveway, past the right turn, and into the parking area. You will see our green and tan restroom building. 




Classes are non-refundable except in the case of cancellation by the provider.
