SCNP Certificate Elective Class: Evergreens 12.7.24
SCNP Certificate Elective Class: Evergreens
Saturday, December 7
Evergreens occur in almost every natural plant community in South Carolina. They are easy to spot against the otherwise gray landscape of winter. By using their characteristics of location, leaves, buds and fruit one can easily begin to identify them. Botanical names such as sempervirens, meaning “always green”, or Chimaphila, meaning “winter loving”, even give you a clue to their evergreen status. Join naturalists Tim Lee and Tricia Kyzer to explore the winter world of evergreens.
Basic Botany is NOT required as a prerequisite for this class.
Please Note:
The South Carolina Native Plant Certificate is predominately a fieldwork-based course, and classes can be physically demanding. Some sites visited by the class require hiking on trails of moderate difficulty. Participants must be in good physical condition and able to hike 1-2 miles, without difficulty or assistance, over terrain with steep sections, where footing will be uneven, with frequent tree roots, rocks, muddy areas and fallen tree trunks to climb or step over. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are required. Do not register if you are unable to meet the physical demands that will be encountered in this course.
