PEER Physics Chapter W - Waves: Teacher's Guide

This Teacher's Guide supports instructors in the implementation of Chapter W - Waves. Throughout this chapter, students build and apply evidence-based models of sound waves. Students compare wave characteristics and models for light and sound before deepening their model of light to include interference and the particle model of light. The big concepts students build throughout the chapter include a mechanistic model that accounts for sound propagation and the particle-wave duality for light. Students also compare the wave model of sound to the wave model of light and they compare the wave model of light to the particle model of light. Mathematical ideas developed include the speed of light and sound and the Planck-Einstein relation for photon energy and frequency. It is useful if students have worked through Chapter E - Energy prior to this chapter, but it is not necessary.
