APP Medical Education Workshop
Many Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are expected to teach in today’s clinical environments—often without formal training or a clear roadmap. Having a learner can often feel daunting or draining without the skills to help keep yourself efficient. This half-day CME workshop is designed to change that.
This session focuses on making teaching more efficient, structured, and ultimately more rewarding. Through a highly practical, workshop-based format, participants will learn how to integrate teaching into the clinical day in ways that reduce burden and increase the quality of your teaching.
The workshop is organized around core, high-yield skills that translate directly to real-world practice. Sessions include how to set clear expectations and learning goals at the start of a rotation, and how to use proven clinical teaching frameworks to guide quick, impactful teaching moments. You’ll also develop skills in giving meaningful, time-efficient feedback and leading brief but effective debriefing after difficult events.
This is not a lecture-heavy experience. The workshop emphasizes active participation, with short demonstrations, guided practice, and peer discussion woven throughout. You’ll have opportunities to try out techniques in real time, receive feedback, and refine your approach in a supportive environment. Whether you are new to teaching or looking to sharpen your skills, the goal is to leave with tools you can immediately apply on your next clinical shift.
What you’ll learn:
How to teach efficiently in busy clinical settings
A simple structure for delivering high-impact mini-lectures
Practical strategies to set expectations and create a positive learning environment from day one
Easy-to-use clinical teaching frameworks (e.g., quick bedside teaching models) to guide teaching in real time
How to give clear, actionable feedback that is less vague and biased
Techniques for leading brief, meaningful debriefs after difficult clinical events involving a learner
By the end of the session, you’ll have a practical toolkit that allows you to approach teaching not as an added task, but as an integrated and energizing part of your clinical practice.
Workshop Objectives:
Apply evidence-informed teaching strategies to effectively engage learners, foster a supportive learning environment, and promote clinical reasoning in busy clinical settings.
Demonstrate foundational clinical educator skills through structured practice in teaching, feedback, and debriefing, with the goal of improving learner development and the clinical learning experience.
