OpenSciEd High School Launch: Biology Unit 1 Serengeti (July 29-August 1, 2024)


Wondering how to get started with the new OpenSciEd high school materials? Want to feel confident navigating the classroom routines, resources, and lessons? Join us for a four day virtual workshop to prepare to implement OpenSciEd High School in your classroom or school. 

DATES: July 29-August 1, 2024
HOURS: 9am-4pm MT with a lunch break from 12-1
LOCATION: This is a virtual workshop; the Zoom link will be emailed to all participants.

Together, we will: 
  • Explore teaching and learning practices anchored in compelling phenomena that are relevant to local and global communities. 
  • Experience lessons as a student and reflect as a teacher.
  • Consider how the materials can apply to your unique setting and context.
  • Navigate the student- and teacher-facing resources to optimize student engagement and learning.
This workshop is offered for three content areas– Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. You’ll choose one content area on which to focus. You’ll also spend time with the other content areas to consider how the materials fit across disciplines and work together to cultivate equitable science learning throughout high school. 

The OpenSciEd Launch is the first in a series of workshops, and focuses on the following units: 
  • Biology Unit 1: Ecosystems: Interactions & Dynamics (Serengeti)
  • Chemistry Unit 1: Thermodynamics in Earth’s Systems (Polar Ice)
  • Physics Unit 1: Energy Flow from Earth’s Systems (Electricity)
Future workshops will dive into additional themes and other OpenSciEd High School units. 

This workshop is open-enrollment, and we welcome individuals as well as district teams to register.

CANCELLATION POLICY: A full refund will be issued if requested in email thirty days prior to workshop start date. No refunds will be issued within thirty days of the workshop start date. 

PARTICIPANT CREDIT: Participants who attend the entire workshop will receive a certificate of attendance. Certificates for partial attendance will not be issued. Graduate credit is available for an additional cost.
