Substance Use Trends from the Front Line: Prevention, Treatment, and Harm Reduction

COAHEC 2023 Networking Education and Research Conference session: "Substance Use Trends from the Front Line: Prevention, Treatment, and Harm Reduction" presented by Ryan Jackman, MD and recorded on September 23, 2023. In this session, participants will learn about substance use trends affecting Colorado, particularly rural Colorado. We will discuss the effects of less-known substances, including supplements such as kratom, kava, and phenibut. We will discuss options providers have for managing withdrawal and ongoing treatment of these substances. Additionally, harm reduction approaches to substance use will be reviewed, including the importance of naloxone with the emerging threat of xylazine.
