Sam Gilliam - Ben II
Sam Gilliam is a Color Field Painter and Lyrical Abstractionist Artist. Born November 30th, 1933 in Tupelo, Mississippi, Gilliam received his BFA from the University of Louisville in 1955 and went on to receive his MFA in 1961 from the same institution. In the early years of his career, Gilliam was involved in the Washington Color School from the late 1950’s to the mid-1970’s. His artwork was primarily on flat canvas before Gilliam made the decision in the 1960’s to present his artwork in a more three-dimensional manner, using canvas that drapes and layers. These hybrids of sculpture and painting have become a defining feature of Gilliam’s work. Gilliam’s works have been featured in galleries all across the United States, and in France, South Korea, and London. Most of his works have been featured in various galleries in Washington D.C., where he currently lives. This print was named after the artist’s grandson.
