Powerboat Practice Day, 2025

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Join us for this unique one-day clinic that serves as an opportunity to refine your skills before a US Sailing Level 1 Small Boat Instructor Course, continue your on-the-water training from a US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Course, or just receive Instructor-led practice before the summer boating season. Instructors will run drills in 17-foot center console Boston Whalers with a small group of students. This is a hands-on, on-the-water class with lots of drive time to practice and receive feedback.

TOPICS COVERED: Dockside and on-the-water skills include: operations checklists, engine troubleshooting, leaving and returning to a dock or slip; holding position; pivot turn; backing; slow and high-speed boat handling; close-quarters maneuvering; towing; person-in-the-water recovery; anchoring; and anything else you want to work on!

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: This course is perfect for those who have completed Safe Powerboat Handling and want to keep developing their skills; Level 1 instructors preparing for the summer; or anyone who is looking for hands-on drive time and practice under the guidance of an instructor.

CERTIFICATIONS: None

PREREQUISITE: Basic boat handling skills. This is not a class for people beginning to learn powerboating skills.

SKILL LEVEL: All levels with previous hands-on training

AGES: 12 years old and up

SCHEDULE: 1-day, 8-hour course

COURSE MATERIALS PROVIDED: We encourage you to review the US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling textbook pre-course.

LOCATION: SUNY Maritime College's campus at 6 Pennyfield Avenue, Bronx, NY 10465. Public transit and parking are available.
