Out of Stock
Fri. May 10 - Sun. May 12, 2024

The US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course is designed to provide sailing instructors with information on how to teach more safely, effectively, and creatively. The goal of the program is to produce highly qualified instructors, thereby reducing risk exposure for sailing programs. Topics covered in the course include: classroom and on-the-water teaching techniques, risk management, safety issues, lesson planning, creative activities, ethical concerns, and sports physiology and psychology.

This class is only part of the process to gain US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Certification. Please refer to this information page, which outlines the entire process. Here are a brief summary of those required steps:
  1.  Take the Online Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals Course (~90 mins)
  2. Take the Online Self-Guided Level 1 Course Prerequisite (~6 hours; need to complete before taking the In-Person Course)
  3. State/Federal Prerequisites
    1. Take a NASBLA Approved Safe Powerboat Course (requirements vary by state)
    2. If over 18, take Online SafeSport Training (~4 hours)
  4. Take an In-Person Level 1 Course for Assessment (~30 hours)
  5. Take a USCG approved CPR/FA Course
You should sign up for all the US Sailing online and In-Person requirements well in advance on their website, especially because in-person courses fill quickly. However it is imperative that candidates complete their prerequisites (steps 1-3) before arriving at their In-Person Course, because otherwise they will not be allowed to participate, and no refund will be issued. Candidates need to complete Step 5 for their certification to be considered valid.

Please sign up for the in-person class at this link. The cart below is inactive. This is a US Sailing/US Powerboating Course. Please direct all questions via email to US Sailing.

US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Certification is a preferred qualification for Summer Sailing Instructor positions at SUNY Maritime. Positions will be available via SUNY Maritime's Human Resources Services.
