ALDOT Asphalt Technician Level 1 Course (FY 23-24)

The Radiation Safety course is a prerequisite for this course. This is a four-day classroom and laboratory course that takes place over two half-days and three full days. The emphasis is the accomplishment of the test procedures necessary to control the quality of asphalt pavements. It will include a review of the asphalt plant and how to produce quality asphalt mixtures, volumetric analysis of asphalt, a discussion of sampling of asphalt mixtures, techniques for obtaining and handling samples and random sampling, and a detailed review of Rice & bulk specific gravity, laboratory compaction of asphalt mixtures (Marshall & Superpave), determination of asphalt content by ignition and nuclear gauge, determination of gradation by extraction, and determination of fine aggregate angularity and clay content (sand equivalent).
