Advancing American Art. Painting, Politics, and Cultural Confrontation at Mid-Century. 2nd Edition Book

Advancing American Art. Painting, Politics, and Cultural Confrontation at Mid-Century. 2nd Edition Book
This color illustrated softbound book tells the history of the Jule Collins Smith Museum's 36 piece Advancing American Art Collection. These 36 paintings were purchased in 1948 by Auburn University art professor Maltby Sykes from a public sale of the works after the United States State Department pulled the "Advancing American Art" goodwill tour from its inaugural European tour. The 79 piece collection traveled to Europe and was then to travel on to Latin America. Due to the political nature of the times and the paintings left of center emphasis - within six months of the exhibit's tour - the paintings became the subject of fierce anti-Communist attacks and returned to the U.S. before the tour was over.
